Before I was converted to Christianity and I was on the fence still serving two masters, although still going to church to keep up appearances; I remember justifying drinking to evangelize. Alcohol took away inhibitions and I would talk about Christianity when drunk. In my twisted thinking I sometimes looked at this as sort of thing as evangelizing. Remember .08 is legally under the “influence” and my friends you are not under the influence of the Holy Spirit when you reach that point although you might feel you are. Drinking was mood altering; it was fun, like all sin. Let’s face it sin is fun. That is why we sin, because we like it, in fact we love it. We love it more than Christ that’s the problem.
Jesus said if you love me you’ll keep my commandments (John 14:15). The proof of our love for Christ is not our church attendance. It’s not our commentary in public like saying “Praise God”, or “I’m blessed.” Those are words that believers might say, but our evidence for loving Christ is our obedience to Him, the bible compares it to a marriage relationship. A spouse cheating on their partner regardless of emotional or physical infidelity shows their heart condition.
If one was to contrast the fruits of the Spirit with the fruits of the flesh in Galatians chapter 5. One would notice that drunkenness is not a fruit of the Spirit. It is a fruit of the flesh and many fruits of the flesh are caused by drunkenness. Galatians 5:19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
When I came under the conviction of the Holy Spirit of my sin and I repented by confessing and apologizing for all of my sins. I asked Jesus to help me do something I couldn’t do. It was to live for Him. I knew I deserved hell, it was only through His grace that I could enter heaven not because I was owed it by my prayer, or sorrow. I prayed, “Jesus if you will help me live for you I will for the rest of my life, but it’s obvious I can’t without you helping me.” That was a turning point for me. I never desired to get drunk again. I never trusted my heart and feelings again which had led me astray for years; I trusted Him and His Word. I had no more desire for worldly fun, I lived a lifetime of worldly fun. I had a desire for holiness, a desire to live a holy life that is pleasing to the One who gave me His life. When a criminal is taken off death row by someone who paid their fine, gratitude to that person and wanting to give them your life is a proper response. That was my response to the Lord Jesus Christ. I owed him my life and out of gratitude for what He did for me I wanted to live for Him.
When I hear people say they have a beer to evangelize, I hear someone who doesn’t understand the truth of salvation. I hear someone say, “what Jesus did on the cross isn’t enough; I have to make it attractive by showing Christians can be like the world.” What opened my eyes was Christ, not a packaged wrapped presentation that was just like every other marketing scheme promising joy. It was His love for me displayed on the cross in contrast to my sinfulness and unworthiness of that grace. Jesus said, “when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.” John 12:32. Show people Jesus on that cross dying for them for their sins. That is how Jesus draws them to Himself. Don’t show them how cool you are because you can drink a beer with them and think you’re evangelizing. That is nothing more than complete ignorance to what draws people to Christ. It’s a man centered gospel instead of a Christ centered one.

The Plentiful Harvest 
To clarify drinking in and of itself is not sin, drunkenness is. We need to beware of legalism, but also we need to beware of antinomianism. Antinomianism, is the opposite of legalism. It’s a balance between law and grace and too far either way is a slippery slope.
In the name of building bridges with unbelievers, I’ve heard of people going to the bar and drinking and doing other worldly (antinomianism) things. The might quote the “be all things to all men” that Paul said, but they really don’t imitate Paul and preach Christ, they ignore the warnings of James 4:4 a warning against worldliness.
Years ago, I can remember an Army Chaplin using the F word with me when I went to him for spiritual advice. Now of course I spoke like that back then so you would of thought I wouldn’t mind. He was trying to relate with me and “speak my language.” I left his office very disappointed and never went back.
This guy was supposed to be a Godly man, and he turned out no different than my army buddies. I didn’t need another buddy, I had buddies. I needed spiritual encouragement from a man of God. Thankfully, I knew what Godly men looked like from the example of my Dad, and a Pastor back home. I saw this guy for what he was a counterfeit. He didn’t discredit Christ to me, he discredited himself as a Chaplin to me.
